But to be fair <a name="more"></a>we've done this before. We've tried to budget, but for the longest time we weren't sure where all our money was going. We thought we lived quite frugally, staying away from too much consumerism and unnecessary junk.<br /><br />But it seemed we were coming up short. So for a month straight, we wrote down every cent we spent from morning coffee to shampoo and meals out. We wrote it all down and kept receipts. At the end of each week we divided what we had spent up into categories including food, toiletries, gifts, gas, and utilities. <br /><br />Neither my husband nor I buy a lot of clothing or gadgets, and we never have. But what we found is that we were spending an astronomical amount on food and dining. We were left wondering what to do because we're both self-proclaimed foodies and refuse to give up high quality, local, organic eats. And in the end, I found out that you don't have to. <br /><br />Try this experiment for a month and I assure you that you'll be able to save the leftover dough for a rainy day, here's how:<br /><br /><br /><br /><b>1. Stock your pantry efficiently</b><br /><br />If you don't have a few meals that you can <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/stock-pantry-vegan-foods.html">cook in a flash</a>, you're much more likely to eat out more than you'd like. <br /><br />If I'm zonked, I'll go with a crowd-pleaser like my <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/a-mouth-watering-tempeh-reuben.html">Tempeh Reuben</a>, <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/eat-for-your-health-and-enjoy-it-tan-tan-noodles.html">Tan Tan Noodles</a>, or <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/food-health/veggie-spouted-garbanzo-beans.html">Homemade Veggie Burgers</a>. We eat out very rarely, but by no means do I prep a four-course meal each night. <br /><br />Have your go-to meals, whatever they are, and always stock the pantry with ingredients to make them. If you're hitting the grocery store each night, you're bound to pick up stuff that you don't need.<br /><br /><br /><br /><b>2. Try ethnic cuisines because they're veg-friendly and less expensive</b><br /><br />You're likely spending way too much money going out to eat, that's generally where we spend cash on entertainment. While you don't have to sacrifice eating out, choose wisely. <br /><br />Ethnic cuisine such as Middle Eastern, Indian, Mexican, and Thai often gives you more bang for your buck. I love this Asian fusion café here in Columbia because its appetizers are well-executed, and I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to make them at home. What's more, I never need a main course because I'm way too full. <br /><br />Indian cuisine is also great because you never need meat, which is what costs the most. Think outside the box, and you'll come out on top.  <br /><br /><br /><br /><b>3. Be flexible with your recipes</b><br /><br />When it comes to dinners at home, it doesn't have to be perfect, and if you're not flexible with preparations, you'll waste a host of ingredients. You don’t need every correct spice the recipe calls for all the time. Always keep garlic, fresh herbs, onions, olive oil, and local butter on hand. <br /><br />If your recipe calls for cilantro and you only have flat leaf parsley, it's not the end of the world. If you have a sweet potato just waiting to be used, add some color to that stir fry or maybe some fiber to a traditional potato salad. Use up your produce in creative ways and don't buy more until you have. <br /><br /><br /><br /><b>4. Buy groceries by category</b><br /><br />To avoid constant return trips to the store, make sure you buy by category. Sounds strange, I know, but if you want to stay healthy and have tasty meals, it's the best way to buy. You'll notice that most of my foods come from the bulk aisle, which is always the least expensive way to buy. <br /><br />When I'm buying for the week I make sure that my list fulfills the following categories but obviously adapt to your favorite healthful foods:<br /><br /><ul><li><b>Grains:</b> Rolled oats (breakfast), spelt pasta, basmati rice, barley, local loaf bread.</li><br /><li><b>Protein:</b> Dried beans, tempeh, raw nuts, nut butters.</li><br /><li><b>Vegetables and Fruit:</b> This is a separate trip to the farmers' market and depends on the season, but I always buy some sort of greens, along with seasonal local veggies and fruit choices. We usually go through about 12 pounds of produce per week for the two of us. </li><br /><li><b>Dairy and Dairy Substitutes:</b> Coconut or soy milk, local cheese, local eggs.</li><br /><li><b>Condiments:</b> Any that I'm out of at the time.</li><br /><li><b>Desserts:</b> Organic, fair-trade certified dark chocolate is always on hand. </li><br /></ul><br /><br /><b>5. Buy spices in the bulk aisle</b><br /><br />Sometimes you have to have certain spices for the recipe to come out correctly, but spices are pricey and some recipes call for tons of different ones. I love to prepare ethnic cuisine, but it's an expensive venture if you buy four different kinds of spices for one meal. <br /><br />Here's the deal: Buy spices as you need them in the bulk section of the store. If I need garam masala and I'm out of it, I buy what I need. It's much cheaper this way, and if you're concerned with quality, dried spices go bad in a really short period of time anyway.<br /><br /><br /><br /><b>6. Grow your own herbs, even if you don't have a green thumb </b><br /><br />Fresh herbs are the biggest rip off at the store. Actually, no matter where you buy them, it's the same deal, you buy too much, they're pricey to start off, and they go bad without you getting to use them all. <br /><br />Even if your thumb is far from green, <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/tv/emeril-green/indoor-herb-garden.html">grow your own herbs</a>. Website designers<br />jump with glee, and SEOs lament that all the work they did<br />educating their clients on why they need to curb their use of<br />Flash will be for naught.<a name="more"></a><br /><br />Think of it this way: If Flash were a food, it would be an herb<br />or a spice. Let's say it's basil. While basil is great in<br />pesto, it's not something that you'd make an entire meal out<br />of. You use it to add flavor to your tortellini. And yet<br />designers around the world – as well as CEOs who want to appear<br />cool – want huge chunks of their websites in Flash. Sigh.<br /><br />Of course, if the search engines truly are indexing Flash this<br />time around, then what's the problem?<br /><br />Flash Can Be Cool<br /><br />Flash sites certainly can do some neat tricks. People can<br />interact with them in ways they can't with a plain-Jane HTML<br />website. Interaction is certainly good, because it can make a<br />site "sticky." And people pass around fun websites to their<br />friends so they can make the little balls spin, or play with the<br />cool virtual cubes. This is great for some websites that are<br />looking to entertain people.<br /><br />Your Business Website is Not the Place for Games<br /><br />If, on the other hand, your company wants people to actually<br />understand what you do when they come to your website, how does<br />playing with the spinning balls further this goal? I don't<br />personally find it endearing to have to guess what's behind<br />each ball or cube when I mouse over it and it makes a funny<br />sound or explodes and perhaps shows a single word or cute<br />saying. If I'm looking to kill time, I might visit your site.<br />But if I'm wondering if you're a good fit for my needs at the<br />moment, I don't want to do a puzzle to figure this out.<br />Instead, I am likely to seek out your competitor who provides me<br />with information, rather than games.<br /><br />Do You Really Need Flash?<br /><br />As you can tell, I'm not a fan of cool Flash sites for a<br />typical business. But what about those who have a more basic<br />Flash site that does indeed provide information? For them, I<br />would ask, why Flash? If you don't need to allow your visitors<br />to interact with your website, then why not just use HTML with<br />Flash accents? Because even if the search engines are indexing<br />the information contained in Flash (more on this in a bit),<br />there are other reasons not to use it. First and foremost, not<br />every browser has Flash installed. In fact, currently on an<br />iPhone or iPad, Flash shows up as a little blue cube. Second,<br />many Flash-based sites use only one URL for the entire site.<br />Besides the search engine implications of that, it is also a<br />nightmare for bookmarking, as well as for most web analytics<br />programs.<br /><br />So, even if search engines are indeed indexing the information<br />in Flash, my recommendation is still to not design your entire<br />website with it.<br /><br />With that out of the way, I just rolled up my sleeves and<br />started looking at how Google is currently treating Flash and<br />whether websites can do just as well in the search results even<br />if important information is contained within Flash.<br /><br />Guess what?<br /><br />Most Flash is Still Highly Invisible in Google<br /><br />To test this, I went directly to some Flash sites and pasted<br />exact words contained within their Flash into Google (using<br />quotes). Result? Most of the sites did not show up in the search<br />results. When I reviewed the source code of two sites that did<br />show up, I found that one was using the phrase I looked for<br />within their Meta description and the other site had lots of<br />text within the code beneath the Flash so that search engines<br />and browsers without Flash would have some meaningful info.<br />While that's a good alternative, the info they had was very<br />different from the info contained in their Flash. That's a bit<br />of a dangerous game to play with the search engines, if you ask<br />me. If that info is good enough for search engines and iPhones,<br />why isn't it good enough for your most important users?<br /><br />Do You Want Your Flash Files Indexed?<br /><br />The other thing I noticed was that even on pages that used Flash<br />sparing<span style="font-family: inherit;">ly, if they had words in the Flash files, a search for<br />those exact words would not typically pull up the HTML page<br />where the Flash was embedded. However, when I searched for the<br />exact phrase and limited the search to only .swf file types<br />(which is what most Flash files use as an extension), the Flash<br />files themselves did show up in the results. This tells me that<br />the Google reps were kind of telling the truth about Flash being<br />indexed, but that it doesn't do website owners much good in a<br />real-world setting.<br /><br /><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">Cool But Not Smart<br /><br />Google searches for the brand names of Flash sites do bring up<br />the sites in the search results (note that their brand is<br />typically in the Title tag). So if that's all you care about,<br />then using all Flash shouldn't be a problem for you. Japanese Officials Douse Quake-Damaged Nuclear Plant with Water From Above

<div class="entry">Japanese officials have deployed military helicopters to dump water over the earthquake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to try to cool down overheated reactors inside.<br /><br />The officials are trying to avert a catastrophic radiation leak from spent fuel rods inside the plant's reactors. Japanese television Thursday morning showed helicopters dumping water over the plant from huge buckets.<br /><br />Senior officials said they have also positioned water cannon trucks to try to spray the damaged reactors from the ground. Efforts will begin later Thursday to restore electricity to the plants so that seawater can be pumped into the reactors on a more permanent basis.<br /><br />The White House says U.S. President Barack Obama offered American assistance with the crisis in a phone call to Prime Minister Naoto Kan Thursday morning.<br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />A top U.S. nuclear official says there is a significant risk of dangerous levels of radiation from the plant, which was damaged last week in a massive earthquake and resulting tsunami. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko told lawmakers in Washington Wednesday that cooling systems inside the plant have failed.<br /><br />In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency said temperatures in three of the reactors at the Japanese plant have been rising. It called the situation “very serious.”<br /><br />Nuclear fuel rods remain extremely hot for weeks or months, even when they are not in use. Without steady supplies of water to keep the fuel rods cool, their outer casings can melt and release large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere.<br /><br /><br /><br />At the time of the earthquake, only three reactors were in use at the plant. They were inside thick concrete-and-steel chambers designed to contain radiation, even if fuel rods melt down. Explosions have severely damaged the outer buildings of all three of the units.<br /><br />Elsewhere, NHK Television quoted the national police saying the confirmed death toll from Friday's earthquake and tsunami has reached almost 5,200, while another 9,400 are reported missing.<br /><br />The plight of thousands of people left homeless by the twin disasters has worsened after a cold snap brought snow to the worst-affect areas. Officials report that supplies of water and heating oil are low at evacuation centers, where many survivors are bundled in blankets.<br /><br />Tens of thousands of households in northeastern Japan are still without electricity in near-freezing weather. Because inflation destroys the value of your money, which means you can't buy as much as you once were able to do.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">R.J. Barry Jones, writing for the <i>Routledge Encyclopedia of International Political Economy</i>, says, "Inflation reduces the purchasing power of all who hold money."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">North Carolina State University economist Mike Walden explains it best. Professor Walden says, "Higher inflation means that we have to get that much more out of our job to stay even. In other words, if the inflation rate is 5 percent a year that means you've got to get a 5 percent pay raise just to keep pace with rising costs."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">In the U.S. the dollar has lost 95% of its purchasing power. But in Switzerland it is a different story. Switzerland has remained a stable economy with relatively low unemployment, a highly skilled labor force and a larger GDP per capita than most other Western European economies and the U.S.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">What's more, according to Darrell Aviss and Larry Chambers, the authors <i>of Strategies for Protecting Wealth</i>, the Swiss franc has maintained its value better than any other major currency in the world. The authors also say that "no other currency comes close to the performance of the Swiss franc."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">In fact while the U.S. dollar has begun declining in value, the Swiss franc appreciated 252% against the dollar from 1974-2006.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">(Of course, there is no guarantee the Swiss franc will always outperform the dollar. Currencies are affected by many economic conditions and can change at any time.)</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Just take a look at the chart below and you'll see what I'm talking about:</div><div align="center" style="margin-bottom: 1em;"><img alt="Swiss Franc vs U.S. Dollar graph" height="190" src="" width="466" /></div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">A recent article in Bloomberg.com quotes one economist as saying the Swiss franc "stands out as the haven currency of choice."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;"><i>The</i> <i>Wall Street Journal</i> says the Swiss franc "benefits from sound public finances... and independent economic strength."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">And Giovanni Staunovo, strategist for the huge global bank, UBS AG says, "The security of the franc is based on the monetary, political and social stability of Switzerland. Unlike some other nations, Switzerland is not battling high levels of debt."</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Mr. Staunovo is right. The Swiss franc is so strong that if you had invested $100,000 into a Swiss annuity in 1971 earning just 4.5% instead of leaving your money in U.S. dollars, 33 years later that investment would be worth $1.5 million.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">(Of course, there is no guarantee the Swiss franc will always outperform the dollar. Although the country itself has always been considered one of the world's wealthiest nations, there are rich people everywhere.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;"><i>BusinessWeek</i> ranks Switzerland No. 7 on the list of countries with the most millionaires: 283,000 to be exact. In the 2010 edition of Ben Campbell's "Swiss Billionaires List," 175 Swiss billionaires were listed. In fact an average of $1.5 trillion is traded every day. Now, let's say one week later, the value of the euro rises to $1.2670 and you decide to exit the trade. How much money did you make?</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Well, take the exit price of $1.2670 and subtract the buying price of $1.2370 and you get .0300. But since you were controlling $100,000 worth of the euro, you multiply .0300 by 100,000 and you get 3,000. You made $3,000 on this trade. But we have to subtract your $2,000 down payment to calculate your true profit. So $2,000 subtracted from the $3,000 means you made $1,000. And you made it in just about a week's time. Not bad, right? If you made one trade a week like this, at the end of a year you would have earned $52,000.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">You have to admit, that's a pretty good return considering you made this money simply by executing one trade a week, which probably took less than 15 minutes.</div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Now let's say you feel very comfortable with the knowledge you've gained trading currencies, and you decide to increase the number of trades you make each week from one to three. That $1,000 now turns into $156,000 a year.</div><div align="center" style="margin-bottom: 1em;"><b>Is a Million-Dollar Fortune Possible?</b></div><div align="left" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Of course, it's only fair that I mention you probably won't get every trade right. These referenced sections generally provide a lot more detail on the option or feature such as what would need to be set in the Transcoder configuration to allow for it to work with the DNAS Server being setup and so on.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />===What is SHOUTcast?===<br /><br />----<br /><br /><br /><br />If you are new to SHOUTcast then this is probably something you may have already asked or you are trying to find out.<br /><br /><br /><br />At its most basic, the SHOUTcast system is based around a ''''client + server'''' configuration which allows you to run a server (either directly or via a hosted service) which can then provide a stream or streams of the 'source' connected to the server to any clients which are connected to the server.<br /><br /><br /><br />The clients connect via a direct connection i.e. '''server <->> client''' where the main flow of data (the stream data) will go from the server to the client.<br /><br /><br /><br />So a simple SHOUTcast setup would consist of the following:<br /><br /><br /><br />Winamp + DSP ? DNAS [sc_serv] ? Winamp<br /><br />(Source) (Server) (Client)<br /><br /><br /><br />This is not the only way to setup a SHOUTcast system and more examples can be seen in the [[SHOUTcast_System_Overview|shoutcast_system_overview.txt]] which goes into more detail about the way SHOUTcast works as well as other ways of setting up a SHOUTcast system (see section 2.0).<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />===Windows Users===<br /><br />----<br /><br /><br /><br />The SHOUTcast DNAS Server and Transcoder are both built to be run from the command-line console (or as a native service if using this mode) which may appear to be daunting when most interaction done with the operating system is done via a graphical interface (GUI).<br /><br /><br /><br />If you are not acquainted with using the command-line console then you will need to find a guide which shows you the basics of using the command-line console along with getting you familiar with using it before trying to get any of the SHOUTcast tools running. If you search for 'how to use the command prompt' then you should find a guide which you can follow to help get you knowledgeable enough with using the command-line console.<br /><br /><br /><br />This may appear to be a step backwards if you previously used the v1 DNAS Server with its very basic GUI wrapper which otherwise was acting in the same manner as the command-line console just without the look of the operating system. However the v1 DNAS Server was at its core a command-line tool just like the v2 DNAS Server is now.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />===Windows Vista / 7 Specifics===<br /><br />----<br /><br /><br /><br />Due to the UAC feature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control) of these OSes you will need to remember the effect that this will have on editing and saving of files.<br /><br /><br /><br />By default the Windows versions of the installer will choose the native 'Program Files' folder '''(*)''' but unless you have disabled UAC or do not have full access to the folder then you will find attempts to save and edit any configuration files will not work.<br /><br /><br /><br />If this is an issue then you should either choose a different folder of all of the files or change where the tools are trying to save files and also to save any changes in your configuration files with a text editor which is running with administrator permissions.<br /><br /><br /><br />This is an unfortunate inconvenience though for making it easier to known where all of the configuration examples and documentation can be found is better. This is due to the tools using the same communication style irrespective of the platform which they being run upon.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />==Getting Installed==<br /><br /><br /><br />When following the steps listed remember to only follow the parts which are applicable to the operating system and the tool or tools which you are attempting to install. If you do want to install multiple tools then it is better to work through the guide for one tool and then to do the same for the other one otherwise it may become confusing especially if you are new to command-line console tools and manual editting of configuration files.<br /><br /><br /><br />If you are not happy with manual editting of configuration files then there is also a configuration builder included as part of the Server and Transcoder distribution - see [[#Configuration_Builder|section 4.2]]. The aim of the configuration builder is to aid in the creation of matching configuration files for both tools which should work. It is still recommended that you do read the accompanying documentation so you can understand what it is that you are doing.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />===Step 1 - Download the Correct Version===<br /><br />----<br /><br /><br /><br />To begin with you will need to download the correct version of the tools you are going to use for the operating system you are setting up your SHOUTcast system on. So if you are using Windows 2000 then you would need to download the Windows 32-bit version whereas if using Windows 7 64-bit then you would download the Windows 64-bit version and so on.
