They want to know what people like and dislike, and what they do and don't do. These huge corporations have spent millions on research so that they can figure all this out.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a name='more'></a><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">All of this information is in the public domain and we can access it. The best bit is that the information these</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">corporations have funded is just as valid for knowing how your website visitors behave.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">To repeat, researchers have found that when people arrive at a website, on average 50% of them will leave that website within 8 seconds.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">In other words, if your website doesn't do something WITHIN 8 SECONDS to keep them there, at least 50% of them will leave. If you don't have a headline in the form of words, then your 'headline' is whatever your visitor first sees when they arrive at your page. It might be a logo, a graphic, a picture or a piece of blank screen, or worse a lame piece of text like 'Welcome', or 'We have been in existence since 1982'. Be honest with yourself and ask - would this stop ME surfing? 'The Fold' is a newspaper phrase. Imagine you are reading a large newspaper, and you have to fold it in half to read the top half before turning over to read underneath. This plays directly into the 8 second rule. If you haven't given the visitor a compelling reason to stop surfing, he/she probably won't even scroll down.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">If you are announcing your new CEO, the fact that you just won an industry award, or providing a long winded introduction or history of your company above the fold, your visitor is not going to be staying.</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">3. Walk in Your Visitor's Shoes</span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br /></span></div><div style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;">Put yourself in the shoes of your potential clients. They have found you on the web because they have specifically looked for you, and Google has considered your site relevant to what they are looking for. What are they interested in? What concerns them? The best <br /><br /><a name='more'></a>federal websites outperform the  best <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/private_sector" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_sector" rel="wikipedia nofollow" title="Private sector">private-sector</a> websites (like Google and <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/amazon_kindle" href="http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B002Y27P3M%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dkivandanu%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB002Y27P3M" rel="amazon nofollow" title="Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, 6" Display, Graphite - Latest Generation">Amazon</a>). In fact, the best  federal websites have some of the highest scores in the entire ACSI,  which measures more than 225 private companies (<a class="zem_slink freebase/en/off-line" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_and_offline" rel="wikipedia nofollow" title="Online and offline">online and offline</a>) and  more than 200 federal services (also online and offline). That's pretty  incredible, isn't it? Two social security sites, with scores in the  90's, have the highest customer satisfaction scores in the entire ACSI;  higher than customer satisfaction all stars like Amazon, Apple, and  oddly enough, Heinz. (it's true; Heinz ketchup is usually one of the  highest scorers).<br /><br /><a href="http://www.thedigitalcitizen.com/.a/6a0120a5c2c299970c0148c8074520970c-pi" style="display: inline;"><img alt="E-gov-best-performers-q4-2010 (3)" border="0" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a0120a5c2c299970c0148c8074520970c  image-full" height="240" src="http://www.thedigitalcitizen.com/.a/6a0120a5c2c299970c0148c8074520970c-800wi" title="E-gov-best-performers-q4-2010 (3)" width="400" /></a><br /><br />Satisfaction  is basically a measure of how well your experience lives up to your  expectations. People have very high expectations of Facebook, and a  score of 64 shows that Facebook isn't coming close to meeting them.  People may have lower expectations of government in general, though I  would also argue that people's expectations are informed by <i>all of </i>their  online experiences. In other words, if someone is navigating from  Amazon to the <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/the_u_s_postal_service" href="http://www.usps.com/" rel="homepage nofollow" title="United States Postal Service">US Postal Service</a> to Google to <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/nasa" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=38.8830555556,-77.0163888889&spn=0.01,0.01&q=38.8830555556,-77.0163888889%20%28NASA%29&t=h" rel="geolocation nofollow" title="NASA">NASA</a> to <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/best_buy" href="http://www.bestbuy.com/" rel="homepage nofollow" title="Best Buy">Best Buy</a>, they  aren't raising and lowering expectations from site to site. If they get  good functionality, usability, and layout on Amazon, they'll expect it  on NASA too.<br /><br />So while it sounds strange to say that 95% of <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/egovernment" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-Government" rel="wikipedia nofollow" title="E-Government">e-gov</a> sites have higher  satisfaction than Facebook, it is true when you define satisfaction as  the ability of an organization to deliver an experience that lives up to  or exceeds expectations. So who knows? Maybe Facebook should be  recruiting its next generation of customer experience professionals from  the feds?<br /><br />On average, private-sector sites still outperform e-gov sites, but  the difference isn't as much as you might think. Overall e-gov gets a  satisfaction score of 75, which trails most of the private-sector online  scores. But when you break e-gov down into categories, we see that  e-gov news and information (74) ties private-sector news and information  (74). He said that international oil markets are  choosing to ignore market fundamentals, preferring to bet on worst-case  scenarios leading to an increase in oil prices. "OPEC member countries  recognise that despite encouraging signs of growth, the world economy  remains fragile. He  also noted that <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_oil_production" rel="wikipedia" title="List of countries by oil production">world oil production</a> has recently dropped by 700,000  bpd, but OPEC members have increased production to make up for the  shortfall.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin: 8.25pt 0cm 12pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 11pt;">"We need to  nurture this growth with continued supplies of oil and gas. We are ready  to do this by providing the necessary crude and committing the required  investments. However, there is little we can do in terms of price  control which is set by international markets.
