Sudah sebelas kali lomba itu diadakan, dan berlangsung setiap tahun. Ada tiga kategori utama yang dilombakan, yaitu Innovation, Games dan World Citizenship. Dari tiga kategori itu, Tim Solite Studio dari Universitas Trunojoyo Madura sukses menyabet juara dua di kategori Games. Ia pun berhasil menggondol hadiah US$10.000, setara Rp100 juta. Anak-anak Madura itu tertawa lebar saat dipotret usai pengumuman pemenang. Mereka menyisihkan 87 pelajar dari 71 negara, yang berkompetisi di final tingkat dunia. Jumlah itu disaring dari kompetisi online dan lokal dari seluruh dunia. "Semua kerja keras kami terbayarkan saat kami bisa membawa bendera merah putih Indonesia di panggung Imagine Cup 2013," kata Ghalib. Tim Solite Studio terdiri dari Asadullohil Ghalib Kubat (Team Leader), Miftah Alfian Syah (Programmer), Tony Wijaya (Graphic Designer) dan Mukhammad Bagus Muslim (<a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_design" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Game design">Game Designer</a>). Tim Juri Imagine Cup sangat terkejut mengetahui game Save the Hamster telah diunduh 30.000 kali hanya dalam waktu dua minggu, 20.000 pada <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.windowsphone.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Windows Phone">Windows Phone</a>, dan 10.000 pada Windows 8. "Banyak orang yang mengatakan, Tim Solite Studio akan berada di panggung saat malam penghargaan. Dan itu benar-benar terjadi," kata Audience Marketing Manager Microsoft Indonesia, Irving Hutagalung. President Director Microsoft Indonesia Andreas Diantoro mengatakan, ini adalah pertama kalinya tim Indonesia menang di Imagine Cup skala global. Keberhasilan ini, kata dia, menjadi bukti para pengembang program di Indonesia sudah diakui. “Bahkan yang berasal dari pulau kecil seperti Madura," kata Andreas yang menyaksikan kiprah tim Solite Studio.  Kemenangan ini pun disambut luar biasa. Nyaris semua media sosial, mulai dari facebook, twitter, hingga blog, terkena demam  kemenangan. Apalagi para anak muda di Madura. Mereka bangga, game besutan anak Trunojoyo ini berhasil menjadi juara 2 dunia. Prancis kalah, dan “Tim Madura” hanya satu tingkat di bawah Austria. Matematika si Hamster Save the Hamsters adalah game edukatif yang dipasang di platform Windows Phone, dan <a class="zem_slink" href="http://windows.microsoft.com/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Windows 8">Windows8</a>. Game ini mengajak pemain belajar Matematika yang mengasyikkan. Dalam permainan, dikisahkan ada empat hamster tersesat. Tugas pemain membantu para hamster pulang ke rumahnya. Ada dua mode game mode, original dan adventure. Pada mode original, pemain harus menghancurkan boks, tali, dan beberapa objek lainnya yang menghalangi si hamster menuju rumahnya. Setiap hamster punya angka pada tubuhnya. Pemain harus menempatkan hamster pada tempatnya sesuai dengan simbol matematika yang ada di tanah. Pada mode adventure, pemain harus menghindari musuh, dan mengambil kunci berisi angka yang tepat, sesuai kombinasi angka yang terdapat pada layar. Hal unik dari Save The Hamster, pemain dapat menyusun kotak, tali, hamster, dan objek-objek lainnya, lalu menjalankannya serta menyimpannya menjadi sebuah level permainan. Mengapa harus hamster? Ghalib mengaku memilih jenis marmut itu sebagai ikon karena karakternya yang lucu. Selain itu, hewan ini kerap jadi mainan kegemaran segala usia, dari anak-anak hingga dewasa. Ia berharap, dengan game ini orang tak sadar sudah diajak bermain matematika. Dan juga berlatih menyelamatkan hewan. “Ide ini datang dari Miftah, sang programmer,” katanya. "Saya team leader yang mengatur semua proyek.” Tonny Wijaya, si desainer grafis, mengatakan peran Ghalib yang tekun dan suka browsing itu cukup besar dalam proyek ini.  Ghalib selalu mencari informasi perlombaan.  “Kami berempat selalu nongkrong di lab,” katanya. Empat sekawan ini suka berdiskusi soal proyek mereka. Tentu saja, sebagai mahasiswa sederhana, mereka tak rapat di kafe. Tempatnya cuma satu, laboratorium kecil itu. Tapi mereka tetap semangat, bekerja sampai larut, dan bahkan menginap di laporatorium mini itu. “Kami selalu kompak sejak pertama kami bekerja sama," kata Miftah mahasiswa angkatan 2009. Dari kesederhanaan Uniknya, anak-anak Madura ini bukanlah besar dari dunia urban, tempat komputer menjadi barang yang akrab. Ghalib misalnya. Dia anak petani. Rumah orangtuanya juga sangat sederhana. Saat VIVAnews berkunjung ke rumahnya di Jalan KH M Cholil Sampang, tempat tinggalnya mudah dikenali. Ada papan kecil bertulis agen sosis. "Itu usaha kecil-kecilan ibu saya," kata anak pasangan Haji Takliman Thalhah dan Hajah Sufiah ini. Tiga kawannya juga tak jauh beda. Ghalib berkisah mula ia terjun di game ini. Saat itu ia magang di studio game, Gate Studio, di Bandung.  Lulusan SMK Teknologi Informasi An-Najiyah, Tambak Beras, Jombang, ini magang dua bulan, tepatnya pada Februari-April 2012.  Bagi dia, magang bukan sekadar merampungkan tugas akhir kampus. Ia belajar betul membuat game, dan bagaimana memasarkannya. Termasuk –agar terkenal— ikut lomba-lomba. Dari situ ia ia mengajak teman-teman di kampusnya, Miftah, Tony, dan Bagus membangun Solite Studio, tempat mereka berkarya menciptakan games. “Lalu saya ajak teman-teman ikut kompetisi Nokia, dan kami menang,” kata Ghalib, yang kini jadi CEO Solite Studio. “Kami dapat uang Rp30 juta,” katanya. Dari kemenangan itu, ia kian yakin, bila ditekuni karyanya bisa lebih berhasil. Mereka pun ikut lomba berkali-kali, dan puncaknya menyabet Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013. Lalu, dipakai untuk apa hadiah Rp100 juta dari Microsoft itu?  Mereka akan membeli rumah untuk markas perusahaan. Harapannya, dengan slogan “We Grow from Dreams”  mereka akan memproduksi game-game orisinal asli Madura. He oversaw the rollout of four Windows operating systems including the most recent Windows 8. Most of us thought he’d be around for the release of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Windows">Windows 9</a>, or whatever else is next, but it looks like the CEO that wouldn’t quit is finally doing just that. Ballmer announced today that he will be retiring within the next 12 months. He doesn’t give an exact date as his <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retirement" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Retirement">retirement</a> is entirely dependent upon the company finding his successor. Oh, and before you ask, there’s no word yet either on who might be replacing him. So, why is Ballmer choosing now to retire? After all, he just announced a <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/ballmer-outlines-microsofts-big-restructuring-2013-07">massive restructuring plan</a> that will see Microsoft transition into a devices and services company. Surely he would want to be around for that, right? Well, a<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/Press/2013/Aug13/08-23StatementPR.aspx">ccording to an internal email</a> to all Microsoft employees, Ballmer says that was the original plan: <blockquote> There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our transformation to a devices and services company focused on empowering customers in the activities they value most. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction. </blockquote> Ballmer’s logic is surprisingly sound. The transition to a devices and services company will take a long time, and he isn’t getting any younger. Microsoft is going to need a younger <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senior_management" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Senior management">executive team</a> that can stick it out for the long haul. In regards to that executive team, Ballmer is optimistic that the current team in place will help move Microsoft into its next phase of growth: <blockquote> This is a time of important transformation for Microsoft. Our new Senior Leadership team is amazing. The strategy we have generated is first class. Our new organization, which is centered on functions and engineering areas, is right for the opportunities and challenges ahead. Microsoft is an amazing place. I love this company. I love the way we helped invent and popularize computing and the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Personal computer">PC</a>. I love the bigness and boldness of our bets. I love our people and their talent and our willingness to accept and embrace their range of capabilities, including their quirks. I love the way we embrace and work with other companies to change the world and succeed together. I love the breadth and diversity of our customers, from consumer to enterprise, across industries, countries, and people of all backgrounds and age groups. I am proud of what we have achieved. We have grown from $7.5 million to nearly $78 billion since I joined Microsoft, and we have grown from employing just over 30 people to almost 100,000. I feel good about playing a role in that success and having committed 100 percent emotionally all the way. We have more than 1 billion users and earn a great profit for our shareholders. We have delivered more profit and cash return to shareholders than virtually any other company in history.</blockquote> As stated above, Microsoft is just starting to look for Ballmer’s replacement. The company’s <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_of_directors" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Board of directors">Board of Directors</a> has put together a committee comprised of Bill <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gates" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="John Gates">Gates, John</a> Thompson and others who will consider potential candidates from inside and outside of the company. “As a member of the succession planning committee, I’ll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO,” said Gates. “We’re fortunate to have Steve in his role until the new CEO assumes these duties.” Until Microsoft announces a successor, let the speculation begin. I would bet on <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/ssinofsky/" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Steven Sinofsky">Steven Sinofsky</a> if he was <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/windows-boss-steven-sinofsky-leaves-microsoft-2012-11">still with the company</a>, but that’s <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/former-windows-boss-steven-sinofsky-will-be-an-executive-in-residence-at-harvard-2012-12">unlikely to happen</a> now.
